General oral microbial membranes and extracellular contents refers to the collective structural components of the oral microbiome, including the lipid bilayers of bacterial and fungal cells and the complex matrix of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) they secrete. These structures are fundamental to the formation of dental biofilms (plaque), providing a protective environment that shields pathogens from host immune responses and environmental stressors (Marsh, 2006). The microbial membrane maintains ion gradients and metabolic functions, while the extracellular matrix, composed of polysaccharides, proteins, and DNA, facilitates adhesion to oral surfaces and promotes community stability (Flemming & Wingender, 2010). In clinical practice, these components are the primary targets for antiseptic agents like chlorhexidine and cetylpyridinium chloride, which act by increasing membrane permeability and causing the leakage of intracellular contents (StatPearls, 2023). Targeting these structures is essential for managing oral infections such as periodontitis and dental caries, although challenges include the non-specific nature of these treatments and the potential for altering the healthy oral microbiota (Jones, 1997).
Disruption of microbial cell membrane integrity, denaturation of cytoplasmic proteins, and degradation of the extracellular polymeric matrix to destabilize biofilms (StatPearls, 2023; Jones, 1997).
