Target intelligence / Profile preview
General oral microbiota metabolic processes refer to the collective biochemical activities performed by the complex community of microorganisms residing in the human oral cavity (Marsh, 2003, Microbiology). These processes include the fermentation of dietary sugars into organic acids, the synthesis of extracellular polysaccharides for biofilm structural integrity, and the degradation of proteins into amino acids (Takahashi & Nyvad, 2011, J Dent Res). In a healthy state, these metabolic pathways maintain a neutral pH and prevent the overgrowth of pathogens; however, metabolic imbalances lead to dental caries and tissue destruction (Kilian et al., 2016, Br Dent J). Therapeutic strategies targeting these processes aim to modulate the ecosystem using agents like fluoride, which inhibits the glycolytic enzyme enolase, or xylitol, which disrupts sugar transport (Marquis, 1995, Can J Microbiol). Additionally, prebiotics like arginine are used to encourage alkali-producing metabolic pathways that counteract acidity (Nascimento, 2018, JDR Clin Trans Res). Because these processes involve a vast array of species, pharmacological intervention must be carefully managed to avoid dysbiosis or the emergence of antimicrobial resistance.
Inhibition of bacterial glycolytic enzymes, disruption of microbial cell membranes, competitive inhibition of carbohydrate transport, and enhancement of alkali production to neutralize environmental pH.
