The general transcription factor IIi pseudogene (GTF2I pseudogene), referenced by Ensembl ID ENSG00000228327, is a non-functional DNA segment derived from the parental general transcription factor IIi gene. Pseudogenes resemble functional genes in sequence but carry disabling mutations, such as premature stop codons and frame-shifts, preventing expression of a functional protein. Although most pseudogenes were historically considered genomic "junk," some transcribed pseudogenes may have regulatory roles via RNA molecules—acting as small interfering RNAs or competing endogenous RNAs to modulate other gene expression.
