General transcription factor IIi pseudogene 23 (GTF2IP23)

Target
GTF2IP23
Molecular classification
Pseudogene, Non-coding RNA, Regulatory RNA (antisense transcript, based on recent research[1]), Related to transcription factor
01

Overview

General transcription factor IIi pseudogene 23 (GTF2IP23) is a non-coding pseudogene related to the functional gene GTF2I. GTF2IP23 produces an antisense RNA transcript that can negatively regulate its host gene's expression (GTF2I) and, in breast cancer cells, promotes cellular proliferation and migration. Unlike canonical targets such as receptors or enzymes, GTF2IP23 does not produce a protein and is not druggable. It is primarily of research interest as a regulator of gene expression at the RNA level, and its upregulation has been associated with breast cancer.[1]

Mechanism of action

None known. There is only mechanistic inference from its regulation of GTF2I, not direct drug targeting[1].

03

Biological functions

Negative regulation of the GTF2I mRNA expression (the functional gene)[1]Regulation of cell proliferation and migration in breast cancer, possibly via RNA-RNA interaction effects[1]No protein function; its role is mediated through regulatory nucleic acid mechanisms
04

Disease associations

Cancer (Breast cancer: GTF2IP23 is upregulated; promotes proliferation and migration of cancer cells[1])Other disease roles: Unclear; literature focuses primarily on breast cancer
05

Biomarkers

Potential candidate as a biomarker for breast cancer due to its upregulation in tumor tissues[1]Not a validated clinical biomarker
