Overview

The genicular artery vasculature consists of a network of arteries—primarily the superior medial, superior lateral, middle, inferior medial, and inferior lateral genicular arteries—that originate mainly from the popliteal artery and supply blood to the knee joint and adjacent structures. These arteries ensure adequate oxygen and nutrient delivery to the articular cartilage, ligaments, synovium, and periarticular tissues, and serve a critical role in collateral circulation, maintaining perfusion if major vessels become occluded. Anatomical variation in the genicular network is clinically significant during procedures such as genicular artery embolization (GAE), which is an emerging treatment for osteoarthritis-related knee pain and recurrent hemarthrosis. GAE involves selective occlusion of abnormal arterial branches to reduce pain and inflammation by decreasing blood supply to inflamed tissues—this is a mechanical and anatomical intervention, not receptor or enzyme targeting at the molecular level. Understanding genicular artery anatomy is crucial for vascular, interventional, and orthopedic surgical planning to prevent complications such as ischemic tissue injury.
