The genicular nerves are a network of small sensory nerve branches that provide innervation to the knee joint capsule and surrounding structures. They originate from larger nerves including the femoral, tibial, and common peroneal nerves, and are categorized (most commonly) into four main branches: superomedial, superolateral, inferomedial, and inferolateral genicular nerves. These nerves, though not a single anatomical structure, are frequently targeted for regional anesthesia or ablation techniques in the management of chronic knee pain, especially when surgical options are inappropriate or unsuccessful. Denervation or nerve block at these sites can offer temporary or sometimes longer-lasting pain relief for conditions such as osteoarthritis or post-surgical pain. “Genicular nerve” is a collective term describing this group; it is not a single well-defined molecular target such as a receptor or enzyme, and thus is considered anatomically descriptive rather than a classical drug target[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8].
