A genome polyprotein is a large, multifunctional protein encoded by the genomes of many positive-sense single-stranded RNA viruses. The viral RNA is translated into a single, continuous polyprotein that is subsequently cleaved by viral proteases into multiple functional proteins required for the virus's life cycle. The polyprotein serves as the precursor for all structural and nonstructural proteins of the virus. It includes domains with diverse enzymatic activities such as ATP binding, cysteine-type endopeptidase activity (protease), ion channel activity, RNA binding, RNA helicase activity, and RNA-directed RNA polymerase activity. These functions are essential for viral genome replication, proteolytic processing of the polyprotein itself, and formation of ion channels in host membranes to facilitate viral entry or egress.
