Overview

DNA damage refers to any alteration in the chemical structure of DNA that impairs its normal function in transcription or replication. This includes modifications such as strand breaks, missing nucleobases, chemically altered bases, abasic sites, adducts, single-strand breaks (SSBs), double-strand breaks (DSBs), DNA-protein cross-links, and insertion/deletion mismatches. DNA damage can arise from endogenous metabolic processes or exogenous environmental factors. Unrepaired damage can lead to mutations, cell death, or cancer.
