Genomic nuclear DNA is the primary molecular target of carboplatin, a platinum-based chemotherapy drug. Carboplatin forms covalent bonds with purine bases (especially guanine), disrupting normal cellular proliferation mechanisms leading to cytotoxic effects specific for cancerous tissues over normal tissues due to higher rates of division in tumors. The drug inhibits replication and transcription by physically blocking polymerases at sites of crosslinked DNA and triggers cell death pathways due to irreparable genetic damage.
