Overview

Germ cell-associated 1 (GSG1) is a protein predominantly expressed in the human testis, integral to spermatogenesis and germ cell development. It is predicted to enable RNA polymerase binding activity and localize to the endoplasmic reticulum and plasma membrane. Low GSG1 expression has been linked to worse outcomes in liver cancer, possibly modulated by estrogen, identifying it as a negative prognostic biomarker in this context. In testicular tissue, GSG1 is important for the maturation of germ cells, and its altered expression may serve as a diagnostic marker for male infertility, especially non-obstructive azoospermia. There are currently no known direct drug interactions, mechanisms of action, or safety concerns for GSG1 as a therapeutic target; instead, its clinical utility lies primarily in disease diagnosis and prognosis rather than pharmacologic intervention.
