GFOD1 antisense RNA 1 (GFOD1-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA transcribed in the antisense direction relative to the GFOD1 gene. Its major biological activity described to date involves post-transcriptional regulation of DNMT1, a key DNA methyltransferase, by blocking ubiquitin-dependent degradation of DNMT1 and upregulating its expression. GFOD1-AS1 is stabilized via N4-acetylcytidine modification by the NAT10 enzyme, and its upregulation is implicated in the pathology of diabetic foot ulcers (DFU)[2]. GFOD1-AS1 does not act as a competing endogenous RNA, but rather binds directly to specific regions of DNMT1, especially under high-glucose conditions. There are currently no drugs targeting GFOD1-AS1, but its role as a therapeutic target and biomarker for DFU is under investigation[2]. Broader roles in inflammation and cancer are suggested but not rigorously established in primary literature, and no pharmacological interventions have been reported[2][4][3].
