Gingival inflammation, commonly referred to as gingivitis, is a reversible inflammatory response of the gingiva to the accumulation of dental plaque biofilm (StatPearls, 2024). It represents the earliest clinical manifestation of periodontal disease and is characterized by redness, swelling, and bleeding of the gums without the loss of connective tissue attachment or alveolar bone (NIH, 2024). The biological process involves a complex interplay between the oral microbiota and the host immune system, leading to the recruitment of leukocytes and the release of pro-inflammatory mediators such as interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) (PMC, 2024). Although not a single molecular target, it is a primary focus of therapeutic management aimed at reducing microbial load and modulating the host inflammatory response (Frontiers, 2024). Pharmacological interventions include topical antiseptics like chlorhexidine and experimental host-modulatory agents such as the complement C3 inhibitor AMY-101 (PubMed Central, 2022). Effective treatment is essential for maintaining oral health and preventing progression to destructive, irreversible periodontitis (Wikipedia, 2024).
