Overview

Gingival tissue, also called **gingiva** or **gums**, is the mucosal, soft tissue in the oral cavity that covers the alveolar parts of the upper and lower jaws and surrounds the base (neck) of each tooth[1][7][5]. It is composed of epithelial and connective tissue, contains collagen fibers, blood vessels, and nerves, and serves as a physical barrier against mechanical stress and bacterial invasion[1][5][8]. Healthy gingival tissue is pink, firm, and fits tightly around the teeth; disease or breakdown of this tissue leads to conditions such as gingivitis or periodontitis, with consequences for tooth retention and overall oral health[9][7][5][2].
