Overview

GJD3 antisense RNA 1 (GJD3-AS1), also called UPLA1, is a recently characterized long non-coding RNA transcript upregulated in lung adenocarcinoma. It is predominantly expressed in the nucleus and promotes cancer cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and cell cycle progression. UPLA1 achieves these effects by activating Wnt/β-catenin signaling through interaction with desmoplakin, and is transcriptionally repressed by the factor YY1. High expression of UPLA1 is associated with poor prognosis and advanced tumor stages in lung adenocarcinoma. Currently, GJD3-AS1/UPLA1 is discussed as a biomarker more than a direct therapeutic target. There is no evidence that GJD3-AS1 encodes a protein, acts as a receptor, or is targeted by any clinically approved drugs. Its primary roles are as an oncogenic lncRNA influencing cancer pathways and as a potential prognostic biomarker.

Biomarkers

Expression of UPLA1/GJD3-AS1 may serve as a biomarker for lung adenocarcinoma prognosis and staging (tumor, node, metastasis)
