Overview

GK antisense RNA 1 (GK-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) transcribed from the GK gene locus in antisense orientation. Its transcript is complementary to glycerol kinase mRNA and is classified as an antisense RNA. GK-AS1 does not code for a protein; instead, it is implicated in regulating the expression of GK and potentially other genes via transcriptional and epigenetic mechanisms. The clinical relevance of GK-AS1 is primarily associated with Glycerol kinase deficiency, a metabolic disorder. There is currently no evidence that GK-AS1 serves as a direct therapeutic target, nor are there approved drugs acting specifically on this lncRNA. Its broader biological and disease roles remain subjects of ongoing research.
