Overview

Glial cell activation is a process in which glial cells (astrocytes, microglia, and oligodendrocytes) undergo changes in morphology and behavior in response to stimuli such as cytokines, chemokines, and CNS insults. This activation leads to neuroinflammation and plays dual roles: pathogenic (contributing to chronic pain and neurodegenerative diseases) and protective (limiting damage and promoting recovery). Blocking maladaptive glial activity is an emerging therapeutic strategy.
