Overview

GFRAL is a receptor that mediates the effects of growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15), particularly in the central nervous system, specifically in the area postrema and nucleus tractus solitarius of the brainstem. Upon binding GDF15, GFRAL forms a complex with RET, activating intracellular pathways that influence metabolic processes, appetite, energy expenditure, and body weight regulation. The GDF15-GFRAL pathway has been implicated in cancer cachexia.
