The glioblastoma amplified sequence pseudogene, designated as ENSG00000262961 in the Ensembl database, is a nonfunctional genomic sequence that shares homology with the protein-coding *glioblastoma amplified sequence (GBAS)* gene (also known as NIPSNAP2), but contains mutations that prevent it from encoding a functional protein. According to the guidelines of the HUGO Gene Nomenclature Committee (HGNC), pseudogenes are sequences resembling functional genes but rendered nonfunctional by mutations such as insertions, deletions, or nonsense changes. While some pseudogenes are transcribed and can participate in gene regulation, there is no evidence that ENSG00000262961 has a defined biological or pathophysiological function. It is therefore not classified as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or any actionable drug target. Care must be taken not to conflate this pseudogene with the functional protein-coding "glioblastoma amplified sequence" gene (GBAS/NIPSNAP2), which does have aliases and may be involved in cellular biology. ENSG00000262961 is a pseudogene, does not encode a therapeutic target, and largely exists as a nonfunctional DNA sequence homologous to the GBAS gene. It should not be confused with the actual protein-coding GBAS/NIPSNAP2 gene.
