Overview

Global immune cell populations refer to the collective assembly of specialized cells that constitute the immune system, including lymphocytes (T cells, B cells, NK cells), myeloid cells (monocytes, macrophages, granulocytes), and dendritic cells (Janeway's Immunobiology, 9th ed.). These cells work in a coordinated manner to protect the host from pathogens, clear cellular debris, and monitor for malignant transformations (NIH, National Cancer Institute). In the context of drug development, this term is often used to describe the broad systemic effects of immunomodulatory therapies rather than a single molecular target. Drugs targeting these populations may act by depleting specific subsets, altering their activation states, or modulating their trafficking (StatPearls, Immunosuppression). Modern immunotherapy, such as immune checkpoint inhibitors or CAR-T cell therapies, seeks to modulate specific subsets within these populations to enhance anti-tumor activity (Nature Reviews Drug Discovery). Because this term encompasses a vast array of distinct cell types and signaling pathways, it is considered too broad to be a specific therapeutic target in a molecular sense.
