Glomerular filtration gradient

01

Overview

The **glomerular filtration gradient** is the net pressure that drives plasma filtration from the glomerular capillaries into Bowman’s capsule in the nephron. This gradient arises from the balance of hydrostatic and oncotic (colloid osmotic) pressures across the glomerular capillary wall. It is mathematically described by the Starling equation, with the net pressure favoring filtration determined by the difference between the glomerular capillary hydrostatic pressure and the opposing forces of Bowman’s space hydrostatic pressure and glomerular capillary oncotic pressure. The effectiveness of this pressure gradient is critical for proper kidney filtration function and its disruption is implicated in kidney diseases[1][3][4][6][7]. "Glomerular filtration gradient" is a renal physiological concept, not a discrete molecular target or receptor suitable for pharmacological targeting; the term does not correspond to a molecule, gene, or protein[1][3][6][7].
