Overview

Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is a clinical measurement used to assess kidney function. It estimates the volume of blood filtered by the glomeruli per unit time. GFR is the best overall indicator of kidney function, and is used for diagnosing and staging chronic kidney disease (CKD).

Mechanism of action

GFR is a measure, not a target. Drugs influence GFR by affecting renal hemodynamics, glomerular permeability, and tubular reabsorption/secretion.
