Glucagon secretion by transplanted α-cells refers to the ability of transplanted or engineered α-cells (often derived from stem cells) to produce and release glucagon in response to physiological stimuli after transplantation into a host organism. This has implications for restoring counter-regulatory responses against hypoglycemia in diabetes and serving as a screening platform for drugs modulating endocrine cell types. Transplanted cells secrete biologically active glucagon in response to fasting or amino acid challenges and can reduce endogenous pancreatic demand for glucagon.
