Glucokinase (GK)

Target
GK
Molecular classification
Enzyme
01

Overview

Glucokinase (GK), also known as hexokinase IV or hexokinase D, is a key enzyme in glucose metabolism and homeostasis. It catalyzes the phosphorylation of glucose to glucose-6-phosphate (G6P), the first step in both glycogen synthesis and glycolysis in the liver and pancreas. It acts as a glucose sensor, especially in pancreatic β-cells for insulin release regulation, but also plays roles in other cells involved in overall glucose homeostasis.
