Glucomannan fiber is a high-molecular-weight, water-soluble dietary polysaccharide extracted primarily from the tubers of the konjac plant (Amorphophallus konjac), consisting mainly of D-mannose and D-glucose monomers in a roughly 1.6:1 ratio, linked via β-1,4 glycosidic bonds. It is notable for its extremely high viscosity and ability to absorb water and form a gel, which underlies its effects as a bulking laxative, an agent that promotes satiety for weight control, and a cholesterol-lowering supplement. It is not a cellular or protein-based therapeutic target, but rather a bulk-acting dietary fiber with beneficial and mechanical effects in the gastrointestinal tract. Common side effects include gastrointestinal discomfort and, rarely, obstruction if not taken with adequate fluids.
Mechanical bulk-forming effect: absorbs water, swells, and forms a gel that slows gastric emptying, carbohydrate/sugar/fat absorption, and provides satiety. Binds dietary cholesterol and bile acids in the intestine, leading to reduced absorption and lower serum cholesterol. Acts as a prebiotic fiber, altering gut microbiota composition.
