Glucose metabolism in brain cells refers to the processes by which glucose, the primary energy substrate for the brain, is transported into and utilized by various types of brain cells—including neurons and glial cells—to generate ATP and support cellular functions such as neurotransmission, maintenance, and repair. The mammalian brain is highly dependent on a continuous supply of glucose from the bloodstream due to its high metabolic demand; although it constitutes only about 2% of body weight, it consumes approximately 20% of total body glucose-derived energy.
