Glucose Transporter (GLUT/SGLT)

Target
GLUT/SGLT
Molecular classification
Transporter, Membrane Protein, SLC2 family (GLUT), SGLT family
01

Overview

Glucose transporters are membrane proteins that facilitate the movement of glucose across cell membranes. The GLUT family mediates facilitated diffusion down the glucose concentration gradient, while the SGLT family uses the sodium gradient to drive active uptake. Different isoforms are expressed in various tissues and play critical roles in glucose homeostasis, nutrient absorption, and renal reabsorption. Dysregulation of glucose transporters is implicated in diseases such as diabetes and cancer.

Mechanism of action

Facilitated diffusion (GLUTs) or secondary active transport (SGLTs) of glucose across cell membranes. SGLT2 inhibitors block reabsorption of glucose in the kidney, increasing urinary glucose excretion.
