Glucose transporter 1 (GLUT1)

Glucose transporter 1 (GLUT1), also known as SLC2A1, is an integral membrane protein responsible for the facilitated diffusion of glucose and other hexoses across the plasma membranes of mammalian cells. It is a member of the solute carrier family 2 (SLC2), specifically classified as a Class I glucose transporter. GLUT1 ensures adequate supply of glucose to energy-demanding organs and supports embryonic development by regulating nutrient transfer. Mutations or deficiencies in GLUT1 cause Glut1 Deficiency Syndrome. Altered expression or function has implications for cancer metabolism and diabetes complications.
