Overview
Glucose transporter activity refers to the function of a group of membrane proteins that facilitate the movement of glucose across cellular membranes. This process is essential for cellular energy supply and glucose homeostasis. The major families are GLUTs (facilitated diffusion) and SGLTs (secondary active transport with sodium). Different isoforms exhibit distinct tissue distributions and physiological roles. Defects in these transporters can cause diseases, including diabetes and congenital disorders. Altered expression/function is implicated in diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome.
