The glucose transporter protein family consists of membrane proteins that facilitate the transport of glucose and related hexoses across cellular membranes. These proteins are essential for cellular energy supply, metabolic regulation, and tissue-specific functions. In humans, this family is primarily known as the GLUT (glucose transporter) or SLC2A (solute carrier family 2) gene family. Defects/mutations cause various diseases including glucose transporter type I deficiency syndrome, and impaired expression/function is implicated in diabetes mellitus. Overexpression or altered localization may be seen in cancer cells.
