Glucuronidase beta pseudogene 5 (GUSBP5)

Target
GUSBP5
Molecular classification
Pseudogene, Processed pseudogene
01

Overview

GUSBP5, also known as Glucuronidase beta pseudogene 5, is a processed pseudogene closely related to the canonical “Glucuronidase beta (GUSB)” gene. It lacks canonical protein-coding potential, with no evidence for functional protein-coding capability, and does not encode a functional enzyme. As a processed pseudogene, it is derived from the retrotransposition of mRNA, lacks introns, and typically does not express proteins in vivo, resembling a known gene but being nonfunctional due to disabling mutations or lack of regulatory elements. The parental GUSB gene encodes an active lysosomal enzyme, a function GUSBP5 does not share. There are no known independent biological or pathological functions in humans, nor any reported disease associations, drug interactions, or safety/therapeutic considerations because it has no confirmed protein product or activity. While GUSBP5 shows expression patterns in some tissues and may have limited roles in gene regulation (e.g., as a non-coding RNA), no direct biological or clinical relevance has been established.
