Overview

GluN2A-containing NMDA receptors are a subtype of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors, which are ligand-gated ion channels critical for excitatory neurotransmission in the central nervous system (CNS). These receptors play essential roles in synaptic plasticity, learning, and memory. They are heterotetrameric complexes composed of two GluN1 subunits and two GluN2A subunits, conferring unique structural and functional properties. Predominantly found at postsynaptic densities in the hippocampus and neocortex, they mediate calcium influx upon activation and are critical for long-term potentiation (LTP) and overall neuronal communication efficiency. Alterations affecting these receptors have been implicated in various neurological disorders including epilepsy, intellectual disability, schizophrenia, and neurodegenerative diseases.
