Glutamate-ammonia ligase pseudogene 5 (GLULP5) is classified as a pseudogene, meaning it is a genomic DNA sequence that resembles a functional gene but is generally nonfunctional and does not encode a protein. It is similar in sequence to the functional glutamate-ammonia ligase gene (GLUL), but lacks protein-coding capability and is not implicated in any therapeutic, biological, or pharmacological role. Pseudogenes like GLULP5 can arise by duplication or retrotransposition of a functional gene, and may accumulate mutations that render them unable to express functional proteins. There is no evidence GLULP5 acts as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or plays a direct role in biological functions or disease.
