Overview

Glutamate decarboxylase 2 (GAD2) is an enzyme that catalyzes the decarboxylation of L-glutamic acid to produce gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. It is a major autoantigen implicated in several autoimmune diseases, including Type I diabetes mellitus and Stiff-person syndrome.
