Overview

Glutamate-gated chloride channels are unique inhibitory neurotransmitter receptors exclusive to protostome invertebrates. They play essential roles in nervous system function by mediating fast synaptic inhibition via chloride influx upon activation by glutamate. Their unique presence outside vertebrates makes them highly effective targets for selective anti-parasitic agents such as ivermectin—a cornerstone drug against several major human parasitic diseases—and important tools for pest control due to their role across many agricultural pests. Their structure-function relationship has provided significant insight into the broader Cys-loop receptor family biology.
