Glutamate ionotropic receptor AMPA type subunit 2 (GluA2)

Target
GluA2
Molecular classification
Receptor, Ion channel, Ligand-gated ion channel
01

Overview

Glutamate receptor 2 (GluA2), encoded by the GRIA2 gene, is a subunit of AMPA-type ionotropic glutamate receptors (AMPARs). AMPARs mediate fast excitatory neurotransmission in the central nervous system. GluA2 plays a crucial role in regulating calcium permeability of AMPARs, with proper RNA editing preventing calcium influx. Defective RNA editing is implicated in neurodegenerative diseases like ALS due to altered calcium permeability and neuronal toxicity. Alternative splicing of GRIA2 affects receptor desensitization kinetics, modulating synaptic responses.
