Overview

The glutamate ionotropic receptor NMDA type subunit 1 (GluN1), encoded by the GRIN1 gene, is an obligatory subunit of NMDA receptors. NMDA receptors are ligand-gated ion channels mediating excitatory neurotransmission in the central nervous system. GluN1 binds glycine or D-serine and is essential for receptor assembly and function, playing key roles in synaptic plasticity, learning, and memory. GRIN1 mutations are associated with severe neurodevelopmental disorders.
