The glutamate ionotropic receptor NMDA type subunit 2A (GluN2A) is a subunit of NMDA receptors, which are ligand-gated cation channels crucial for synaptic plasticity, learning, memory, and brain development. GluN2A determines the location and function of the receptor in the brain and provides the binding site for glutamate. Mutations in GRIN2A, the gene encoding GluN2A, are associated with various neurological disorders, including epilepsy, intellectual disability, and autism spectrum disorder.
Agonist binding opens the ion channel, allowing calcium and other ions to flow into the neuron. Antagonists block the channel or prevent agonist binding.
