Overview

Glutamate receptor 1 (AMPA subtype), abbreviated as GRIA1, is a critical subunit of the AMPA receptor complex, which mediates fast excitatory synaptic transmission in the central nervous system. It encodes one of four subunits (GluA1–GluA4) that assemble to form AMPA receptors. These are ionotropic glutamate receptors functioning as ligand-gated cation channels. They are primarily activated by the neurotransmitter L-glutamate and synthetic agonists. GRIA1-containing AMPARs mediate rapid excitatory neurotransmission essential for brain functions such as learning and memory formation. Their dynamic regulation at synapses underlies processes like long-term potentiation.
