The AMPA receptor is an ionotropic glutamate receptor subtype responsible for mediating fast excitatory neurotransmission in the central nervous system. It is a tetrameric complex composed of GluA1-4 subunits, which upon binding of glutamate, opens a cation channel permeable to sodium, and sometimes calcium, leading to rapid depolarization. AMPARs play critical roles in synaptic plasticity, learning, and memory, and are implicated in various neurological disorders.
