Overview

Glutamate receptor ionotropic, NMDA 2B (NR2B or GluN2B), is a subunit of the NMDA receptor, a ligand-gated ion channel crucial for excitatory neurotransmission. It forms a heterotetrameric complex with NR1 subunits, mediating synaptic plasticity, learning, memory, and brain development. Mutations in GRIN2B, encoding NR2B, are associated with various neurodevelopmental disorders. Activation requires glutamate and glycine/D-serine binding, as well as membrane depolarization to relieve Mg2+ block.
