The glutamate receptor ionotropic AMPA subtype (AMPAR) is a ligand-gated ion channel that mediates fast excitatory neurotransmission in the CNS. It is a tetramer composed of GluA1–GluA4 subunits. Upon activation by glutamate or agonists, the channel opens, allowing rapid influx of sodium ions, depolarizing postsynaptic neurons. Malfunction or dysregulation is implicated in neurological diseases, including epilepsy and neurodegeneration.
