Glutamate receptor ionotropic kainate 5 (GluR5) is a subunit of the kainate class of ionotropic glutamate receptors. These receptors are ligand-gated ion channels that mediate fast excitatory neurotransmission in the central nervous system by responding to the neurotransmitter glutamate. GluR5 plays a critical role in normal synaptic function and plasticity. RNA editing and alternative splicing generate different isoforms with varying Ca2+ permeability and sensitivity to inhibition.
