Overview

The glutamate receptor ionotropic kainate subtype (KARs) is a family of tetrameric ligand-gated cation channels activated by glutamate and kainic acid. These receptors mediate fast excitatory synaptic transmission in the CNS and modulate neurotransmitter release. They are composed of various combinations of five subunits: GluK1–GluK5. KARs are promising targets for pharmacotherapy in neurological diseases involving basal ganglia dysfunctions such as epilepsy or movement disorders.
