Glutamate Receptor Ionotropic NMDA Subtype (NMDAR)

Target
NMDAR
Molecular classification
Ion channel, Receptor, Ligand-gated ion channel, Ionotropic glutamate receptor
01

Overview

The NMDA receptor is a subtype of ionotropic glutamate receptors, which are ligand-gated ion channels mediating the majority of excitatory neurotransmission in the mammalian central nervous system. It requires co-binding of glutamate and glycine for activation and is characterized by voltage-dependent Mg²⁺ block and high Ca²⁺ permeability. It plays a crucial role in synaptic plasticity and is implicated in various neurological disorders.
