Glutamate Receptor NMDA Subtype (NMDAR)

Target
NMDAR
Molecular classification
Receptor, Ion channel, Ligand-gated ion channel, Glutamate receptor
01

Overview

The N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor is a subtype of glutamate receptor and functions as a ligand-gated ion channel in the central nervous system. It plays a critical role in excitatory neurotransmission, synaptic plasticity, learning, and memory formation. The NMDA receptor is unique among ionotropic glutamate receptors for its high calcium permeability and voltage-dependent activation due to magnesium block.

Mechanism of action

Ligand binding and membrane depolarization open the ion channel, allowing influx of Ca²⁺ and Na⁺ ions, and efflux of K⁺ ions. Antagonists block the channel pore, preventing ion flow.
