Glutamate release refers to the process by which the neurotransmitter glutamate is secreted from cells—primarily neurons and astrocytes—into the extracellular space, where it acts as the main excitatory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. This process is fundamental for synaptic transmission, learning, memory, and various aspects of brain function. Mechanisms include vesicular exocytosis in neurons and transporter reversal, channel opening, and Ca(2+)-dependent exocytosis in astrocytes. Dysregulation of glutamate release can lead to excitotoxicity, implicated in various neurological disorders.
