Overview

Glutamatergic receptors, also known as glutamate receptors, are a family of cell surface proteins that mediate the effects of the neurotransmitter glutamate—the primary excitatory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system (CNS). These receptors are essential for fast excitatory synaptic transmission, synaptic plasticity, neuronal development, learning, memory formation, and overall neuronal communication. They are divided into two main classes: Ionotropic (NMDA, AMPA, Kainate) which are ligand-gated ion channels, and Metabotropic (mGluR1–mGluR8) which are G-protein-coupled receptors.
