Overview

Glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) is an enzyme that catalyzes the decarboxylation of glutamate to produce gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, and carbon dioxide. There are two main isoforms, GAD65 and GAD67. GAD is a key autoantigen in type I diabetes and is also implicated in several neurological disorders.
