Target intelligence / Profile preview
Glutamine insufficiency regulator of glutaminase lncRNA (GIRGL) is a long non-coding RNA transcript also known as MACC1-DT, which plays a pivotal regulatory role in the cellular response to glutamine deprivation[5]. GIRGL controls the expression of glutaminase, a key enzyme for glutamine metabolism, thus modulating cell survival during nutrient stress. This lncRNA has garnered attention in cancer research, as tumor cells frequently encounter microenvironmental glutamine shortages and depend on metabolic adaptation for growth and metastasis. GIRGL is a member of the non-coding RNA family and acts at the epigenetic and transcriptional levels to impact metabolic gene expression. Its dysregulation may promote malignancy and cancer progression, making it a molecular target of interest for cancer therapeutics and a potential biomarker of cancer metabolic phenotype[5]. No currently approved drugs specifically interact with GIRGL, but its RNA function suggests future therapeutic modulation could use RNA-targeted approaches such as antisense oligonucleotides or RNA interference. As with other lncRNA targets, safety concerns include potential widespread biological effects due to non-specific regulation of multiple metabolic pathways[5].
Not applicable yet; therapeutic concepts would involve antisense inhibition or RNA-targeting mechanisms.
