Amidophosphoribosyltransferase (ATase), also known as glutamine phosphoribosylpyrophosphate amidotransferase (GPAT), is a key enzyme in the de novo purine biosynthesis pathway. It catalyzes the conversion of 5-phosphoribosyl-1-pyrophosphate (PRPP) and glutamine into 5-phosphoribosyl-1-amine (PRA). This reaction represents the first committed step in purine nucleotide synthesis and is essential for cell proliferation and DNA/RNA production. It is a potential target for anti-cancer and anti-infective therapies.
